UNITED BIDDING FOR MODRIC

Manchester United’s search for a midfield playmaker to fill the hole left since Cristiano Ronaldo left could soon be over. The Premier League Champions are set to launch a £50million bid to bring Spurs’ Luka Modric to Old Trafford.

Modric has been one of the stars of a Tottenham side that now look like real contenders for this season league title should either United or City slip up and for a side such as United, who seem to be lacking a certain amount of flair in centre midfield. United have brought back Paul Scholes, such is their desperation for an extra dimension in the centre of the park. And whilst the former England man is doing an admirable job he really must be seen as a very much short term option.

With Wesley Sneijder still understood to be keen on a move to Manchester United, Modric is not the only man United are looking at but he and Spurs could be given something significant to think about if the rumours of a £50million bid are to be believed. With the current stars of Manchester United’s centre midfield being Anderson, Cleverly and Carrick along with two men in their late 30’s the need for another option is obvious.

Whilst this trio are all good players, and Cleverly in particular has the potential to become world class they need something a little more. Modric seems the obvious choice and he is understandably top of Ferguson’s shopping list for the summer.

Whilst Modric may cost United more than Sneijder initially, the wages for the Croat would be significantly less. Sneijder is currently sitting on £250,000 a week whereas Modric is earning £60,000. United could double this figure and would still make the £20million back in about three years and not break their wage structure, according to betfair.

Further to that is the fact that Modric has proven he can do it in the Premier League and United’s choice appears clear, expect a significant attempt from United to lure Modric away in the summer.

Modric will have a chance to impress when Croatia play in the European Championships in the summer. According to the latest Euro football betting odds Modric and his team-mates have a slim chance of making it through to the final, but will be able to raise a few eyebrows along the way if they perform well against France in their group.
